Gym membership – a modern sickness

Monday, September 3rd, 2007

If I were an entrepreneur I would be in the gym business. They’re like churches to irrationality.

Picture this; a sedentary office worker is told by their doctor, or they just feel the need, to exercise. Do they exercise? No. They drive to the nearest gym, buy a monthly or annual membership, attend once or twice then never go again but continue paying the subscription. It’s almost as if they feel better just having the badge of membership. It wouldn’t surprise me if most of the gyms stood empty for most of the time.

I have to surmise all this because I never go to a gym. I exercise instead.

Yeah, that’s right, I cycle where I can, I jog around my home, I do press ups and sit ups in my home, I shower in my home… you don’t need a dedicated building in a shopping mall somewhere to break some sweat.
